What is the FDIC?
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is an independent agency of the U.S. federal government that protects depositors against the loss of their insured deposits if an FDIC-insured bank fails. The FDIC was created in 1933 in response to bank failures during the Great Depression and has maintained continuous deposit insurance since then.

- Retirement accounts (IRAs): $250,000 per depositor
- Trust accounts: $250,000 per eligible beneficiary (up to 5)
- Business accounts: $250,000 per corporation, partnership, or unincorporated association
What is Covered?
FDIC insurance covers all types of deposits received at an insured bank, including:
- Checking accounts
- Savings accounts
- Money market deposit accounts
- Certificates of deposit (CDs)
- Cashier's checks, money orders, and other official items
What is NOT Covered?
FDIC insurance does not cover investment products, even if purchased through an FDIC-insured bank, including:
- Stocks, bonds, and mutual funds
- Annuities and life insurance products
- Municipal securities
- U.S. Treasury bills, bonds, and notes (these are backed directly by the U.S. government)
